How well do you know about HPV?

I was sent an email from BzzAgent to participate in a new campaign about HPV. I decided to join the campaign because I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn more about HPV and I can educate others about it. BzzAgent sent me a BzzKit with lots of information, so now I would like to share it with you.

What is HPV?
HPV is short for Human Papillomavirus. About 30 types of HPV affect the genital area. Some types can cause cancer. Other types can cause genital warts. ALL types of genital HPV can cause abnormal Pap smears. HPV often has no signs or symptoms, so many people don't know they have it. In result of not knowing, many pass on the virus. Anyone who has any kind of sexual activity involving genital contact can get HPV - intercourse is not necessary.

Did you know?
  • Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of HPV.
  • While half of all woman diagnosed with cervical cancer are between the ages of 35-55 years old, many of these women were probably exposed to cancer-causing HPV types in their teens or 20s.
  • It is a fact that 8 out of 10 women will get HPV by the time they're 50!
  • HPV can affect MEN and women - it's not a virus only certain women get!
So how can I protect myself?
I would recommend that you inform yourself by visiting
Also, talk to your doctor about ways you can protect yourself from cervical cancer and make sure you get a YEARLY pap smear. A Pap smear can't diagnose HPV. But it can look for abnormal cells (that are caused by HPV) in the lining of the cervix before the cells become precancer or cancer. There is also a vaccine called Gardasil, which is the only cervical cancer vaccine that protects against 4 types of HPV.

I will admit that I knew little about HPV (I know I'm not the only one), so I encourage you to spread the word. By reposting this or linking to this post, you can educate so many women! Thank you.

Note: You can register for a email reminder from the College of American Pathologists. You can choose any date you like, and a message will be sent to the email address you specify reminding you to schedule your screening test.

Tip-a-licious Thursday

Hello Everyone,

I was sitting here one day and noticed I could see light (no, not THE LIGHT) but along the door frame. I got up and felt the draft and thought how much heat do we lose or how much cold air comes in through there. That is money wasted, so I went to the store and bought some weather stripping. The weather stripping has an adhesive backing and very easy to put on. Now we no longer have that draft coming in. Needless to say there are many ways to be more energy conscious and thought I'd share some with you today.

Energy Saving Tips
Big savings through no-cost and low-cost actions

Replace standard incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and save 75% of lighting costs.

Unplug electronics, battery chargers and other equipment when not in use. Taken together, these small items can use as much power as your refrigerator.

Take steps to cut water use such as installing faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads, and low-flush toilets. As much as 19% of California electricity is used to pump, transport and treat water.

A 5° higher setting on your air conditioning thermostat will save about 10% on cooling costs.

Always buy ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and equipment - they're up to 40% more efficient. Find rebates and incentives in your area using this rebate finder.

Turn your water heater down to 120° or the "Normal" setting when home, and to the lowest setting when away. Water heating accounts for about 13% of home energy costs.

Reduce air conditioning costs by using fans, keeping windows and doors shut and closing shades during the day.

Turn off unnecessary lighting and use task or desktop lamps with CFLs instead of overhead lights.

Enable "power management" on all computers and make sure to turn them off at night. A laptop computer uses up to 90% less energy than bigger desktop models.

When possible, wash clothes in cold water. About 90% of the energy use in a clothes washer goes to water heating.

Run your dishwasher and clothes washer only when fully loaded. Fewer loads reduce energy and water use.

Make sure your dryer's outside vent is clear and clean the lint filter after every load. When shopping for a new dryer look for one with a moisture sensor that automatically shuts off when clothes are dry.

Test for air leaks by holding a lit incense stick next to windows, doors, electrical boxes, plumbing fixtures, electrical outlets, ceiling fixtures, attic hatches and other locations where there is a possible air path to the outside. If the smoke stream travels horizontally, you have located an air leak that may need caulking, sealing or weather stripping.

Helping Our Military Families

I know this has been posted many times before AND IT SHOULD BE! We always think about the many different ways we can help our troops but what about their families?

Have you ever heard of the Overseas Coupon Program?
This program serves military families by assisting you to forward "manufacturer's coupons" to overseas military bases. These bundles of coupons are placed on tables, at the PX and Commissary, or handed out forse by military members and families on base. This helps the family save valuable dollars and stretch their budget.
Here are a few things you should now:

  1. There is no minimum to donate.

  2. Send coupons that are expired up to 2 months MAX.

  3. You can sign up as an individual, group, or organization.

  4. Adopting a base is simply the easiest way to support the program. Find out more about adopting a base here.
Helping the Overseas Coupon Program has got to be one of the easiest ways to help! Let's face were going to throw away your expired coupons, right? Well, now you can send them to our military families instead :)

What are other ways you can help?
Well as you may know, Frugal Mama and I are both Navy wives and we greatly appreciate programs like the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA.) ASYMCA programs aim to bring families closer together while at home and especially during deployment. Healthy families contribute substantially to the success of service members and the entire military, providing confidence and peace of mind.

Local programs include:
  • Home Visit Counseling

  • Respite Care

  • In-Home Parenting Education

  • Emergency Food Supplies

  • Young Family Support

  • Mom and Tots Time

  • Sharing Caring Moms

  • Daddy & Me/ Mommy & Me

  • Food for Families

  • Family Abuse Shelter

  • Child Abuse Prevention

  • Parenting Workshops

  • Infant Car Seat Loan
There are a number of other programs they offer to service members and their dependents. Check them out by clicking here. To find a location near you click here. The ASYMCA is entirely self-funded through individual donations, corporate contributions, and a standing YMCA endowment that pays for our military programs and services in full.

Donate to the ASYMCA today by clicking here.

We want to say thank you for your support!

Tasty Tuesday

I would like to introduce you to the simplest recipe for Egg Drop Soup! My daughter is one of the pickiest eaters and she LOVED it! Can you believe she actually asked for seconds?! Well here is what you need:

Makes 4 servings
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons chopped green onion
In a medium stock pot, slowly heat chicken broth and cornstarch. Stir constantly until thickened. Pour beaten eggs into soup and stir once around stock pot very gently, in order to break up eggs. Remove soup from heat immediately, divide into four portions and garnish with green onions. And there you have it: simple, cheap, and yummy! Enjoy!

You can add sesame oil or pepper for taste. Also you can add more cornstarch to thicken to your liking.**

It's Tax Time!

Every year I use TurboTax and I love it. You may qualify to use the Freedom Edition for free federal tax preparation and e-file, if the following apply to you:
  • if your Adjusted Gross Income is $30,000 or less
  • you are active military (in 2008 with an AGI of $56,000 or less)
  • you qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit. Includes Form 982 (Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief).
You qualify for a free state filing, too, if you are filing in a state that sponsors a Free File Program. Free File Program states include:

If your state does not sponsor a Free File Program, you can still prepare and file a state return within the Freedom Edition for only $9.95.*Credit card required

I heart my Kids!

Good Afternoon, everyone! I decided to take a break from my usual "deals" posts and take this time to talk about my kids. I have two kids: Kanani, 9 & Jae'Sun (pronounced, 2.

Jae'Sun is in his terrible twos stage, always yelling "NO" and "You're mean!" He still is not potty trained and BOY do I hate changing his diapers. Gosh this boy loves to eat and will eat anything (yes anything!) that you give him. Jae'Sun and Kanani are total opposites.
Kanani is so dramatic and talkative. At her Pre-K graduation she was awarded "Most Likely to go to Hollywood" because her teacher said Kanani is so outgoing and dramatic. I swear I can not leave Kanani with anyone (people I know of course) because she tells them our whole life story. That is her downfall...she is so gullible and talks too much.
We recently had a talk with her about strangers and we soon realized that she needs more training in that subject. My husband and I gave her scenerios and the letter grade we would give her is an 'F'. I was shocked because I thought she knew about the whole Stranger Danger, but I guess we as parents assume that because we discussed 'Stay away from Strangers' and etc. that are kids know better. I urge you to have this discussion again and test your kids with scenerios. Also you should really consider having a family password. I would like to attach a Child ID Kit for you guys. Print it as many times as you would like, fill it out, and put it in a safe place. Hopefully you never need it but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Good Evening Everyone,
I just got back from Krogers and boy do they have some great deals going on. If you buy ten of the participating products you get $5.00 off, top that with your coupons and you've got some outstanding deals.

Today I seen a mother and daughter shopping both had their coupon binders in their carts, and oh it reminded me of my daughter. I wish we lived closer to each other, but for now I'm here in Texas and she's in California. We have so much fun together (she's a nut) okay, you're right she had to get it from somewhere and I guess she got it from me. I say all this to say kids grow up so fast. It's unbelievable how time just flies right before your eyes that you don't recognize, (HAHA for those of you that didn't understand that, it's a lyric to a song). It seems like just yesterday my daughter was playing with her New Kids on the Block toys. (Sorry baby I had to go there) Okay, let me quit reminiscing ::sigh:: and get back to my good deals.

Here's what I bought: (all prices reflect the $5.00 off ten)
3-Kleenex $1.09 (40 cents off/doubled)= 29 cents ea
4-Glade Air Freshners 46 cents ea ($1.00 off 2)=Free

Total- $37.87 (B4 the discount)
Minus the $10.00 for buying 20

They had several other good deals but these are the things I needed to buy today. I'll go back again so I can get my free air fresheners and Steamers.

Tip-a-licious Thursday 1/22

Although we find great deals on household cleaners from time to time. Have you ever considered making your own? It's inexpensive, less harmful to your family, and eco-friendly!

All Purpose Window and Glass Cleaner

Vinegar cuts grease and leaves windows sparkling clean. This mixture is absolutely safe.

1/4 cup white vinegar
1 quart of water

Pour vinegar and water into a bowl or container, or mix the ingredients in a spray bottle. Clean windows directly with a sponge dipped in the bowl of cleaner or spray on and wipe clean. You can use a number of things to wipe clean, some examples: newspaper or cloth diapers.

Bathroom Mold
Mold in bathroom tile grout is a common problem and can be a health concern.

Mix one part hydrogen peroxide (3%) with two parts water

Put in a spray bottle and spray on areas with mold. Wait at least one hour before rinsing or using shower.

Carpet Stains
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.

Spray directly on stain, let sit for several minutes, and clean with a brush or sponge using warm soapy water.

For a heavy duty carpet cleaner, mix 1/4 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar. Rub paste into carpet and leave for a few hours. Vacuum.

Chopping Block Cleaner
Rub a slice of lemon across a chopping block to disinfect the surface.

For tougher stains, squeeze some of the lemon juice onto the spot and let sit for 10 minutes, then wipe.

  • Plastic food storage containers - soak overnight in warm water and baking soda
  • In-sink garbage disposal units - grind up lemon or orange peel in the unit
  • Carpets - sprinkle baking soda several hours before vacuuming
  • Garage, basements - set a sliced onion on a plate in center of room for 12 - 24 hours
Dishwasher detergent
Powder Recipe #1

1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax

Powder Recipe #2

1 cup Baking Soda
1 cup Borax

For the above two recipes:
  • Mix thoroughly and store in a plastic container, use approximately 2 TBS per load.
  • Use vinegar in the rinse compartment as a rinse agent to help prevent residue
  • Try adding 2-3 drops essential oil
Furniture Polish
For varnished wood, add a few drops of lemon oil into a 1/2 cup warm water.

Mix well and spray onto a soft cotton cloth. Cloth should only be slightly damp. Wipe furniture with the cloth, and finish by wiping once more using a dry soft cotton cloth.

For unvarnished wood, mix two tsps each of olive oil and lemon juice and apply a small amount to a soft cotton cloth. Wring the cloth to spread the mixture further into the material and apply to the furniture using wide strokes. This helps distribute the oil evenly.

Reusable Dryer Sheets
Fabric pieces
4 Tbs liquid softener
10 Tbs water

Cut fabric sheets from old PJs, rags, or leftover scraps from sewing and cut into 3″ x 5″ strips (approx.). Stack the fabric strips in a cleaned margarine tub (large size) or plastic container (cleaned baby wipes container works well too). Mix the liquid softener and water together, then pour evenly over top of stacked flannel strips. Seal container and shake well.

You can use several dozen strips with this mixture. Leave sealed for 2 or 3 days, then use one flannel strip per load–squeeze out excess if necessary (it should be just damp). Keep container sealed at all times. Wash strips after use, then use again to make another batch when needed.

Another option is to pour liquid fabric softener into a clean spray bottle, and spray 4-6 times onto a designated rag. Wash the rag from time to time to remove buildup.

Tasty Tuesday Jan 20th

I thought this recipe would be appropriate because it's my sons favorite and today is his birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARRY (He's 19 now but still my baby) So today I thought I'd let you try some good ole Churro's. (Homemade of course) This one is easy to do. Never had them? Well, I think you'll love them. Go ahead give it a try.

1 Pkg. Yellow cake mix
1 & 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1 egg

Heat 2 in. of oil in large skillet over medium heat. While that is heating combine all ingredients and beat at low speed until all combined. At medium speed beat until dough forms. Transfer to pastry bag with large star tip. In batches, pipe 4" long strips into hot oil. Fry, turning once until golden brown (about 1 minute). Drain on paper towel, cool and sprinkle with confectioners sugar.

TIP-a-licious Thursday

Okay Ladies,
Here's your tip for today-Homemade Body Wraps
Have you ever gone to a salon to get a wrap, only to pay over a hundred dollars for this. Well I did, sure I lost a few inches but I was also out $125.00. So I thought to myself , why can't I do this at home? After all, all they did was put some clay and wrap me up. I did some research and here it is and now I have ingredients to do it several times:
**Note: It will be easier if you have someone help you wrap. Also you will need to wear nothing or simply some old undies.**
The body wrap is based on a 2 step process - absorption and compaction.
First - The clay is applied to the skin. Second - Warm, wet cotton bandages are wrapped around the target areas. The warmth opens the pores, and the clay acts as a sponge, absorbing the fluid based toxins that are held between the cells. These are fluids that you cannot sweat out, or exercise away. When these fluids are extracted, there are now "empty pockets"where the fluid used to be. The elastic in the bandages squeeze the body's tissues, compressing and compacting these "empty pockets". When held in place, the body's tissues start to re-adhere these spaces, closing them up, re-shaping your body. When you remove the wraps, your body should be slimmer, more compacted. These products work by expelling the toxins from the body in the form of a liquid. Almost anyone should be able to have a wrap, but if you have a medical problem, please check with your doctor first. I have eczema and I have to put gloves on my hands because almost everything irritates them, so if you too have sensitive hands I would recommend using plastic/latex gloves. I found the Bentonite at the Vitamin Store, everything else is easy to find.
You will need:
2 cups of water
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 cup of bentonite or green clay
1/4 cup sea salt
Ace bandages/or you can buy some cheap $1.00 stretchable fabric from walmart and cut into strips (long ways) Your going to use these as wraps. I use the strips then a few ace bandages to secure them in place and provide a little more compaction. You will need to soak in warm water before wrapping. It's quite messy.
Begin by boiling water and adding sea salt until it is fully dissolved. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir. You may add some more water in order to form a wet paste. (test before applying to your skin)Massage the mixture onto the parts of your body you want to wrap. Wrap yourself snugly with the warm, wet strips. Lay in the bathtub for a minimum of 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Follow these tips to make certain that you have the best experience possible.
- Herbal body wraps are typically very messy so keep the experience in the bathtub.
- Before you apply the wrap, take a warm shower in order to open the skin pores.
- Drink plenty of water both before and after the wrap session to help flush out all of the toxins better.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, soda drinks, sugar and fried fatty foods for the next two days.
- It is very boring to lay in the tub and stare at the ceiling for 45 minutes. To make the experience more exciting, you can read or listen to a MP3 player.
-or you can ride a exercise bike or walk on treadmill (they usually have you do some kind of aerobic exercise while you are wrapped at the spas) so just do whatever is comfortable.
Just remember it is messy and moving around you may need to adjust the wraps as they will tend to loosen up if you are moving.

Essential oils and herbs usually used in body wraps include: Add 2 drops oil or 2 tsp powder to the above recipe
Essential oils: lavender (this is what I use), lemon, sage, lemongrass, sandlewood, grapefruit, rosemary, olive oil.
Herbs: Alfalfa leaf powder, chamomile flower powder, ground basil, rosehip powder, rose petal powder.

Rite Aid Shopping Plan

Good Morning Everyone,

I was trying to work out a shopping plan for my mom but there isn't a CVS or Walgreens in the big city of Corcoran. For those of you that have never heard of Corcoran it is located in the Central Valley, best know as The Farming Capital of the World and also for their famous inmates (prison there has a larger population than the town itself.) I grew up there and it is and always will be HOME. But guess what?, they do have a Rite Aid so I checked out their circular online and found the following. It works out pretty well, wish we had one here. So here it is MOM.

Print this coupon it's $5.00 off purchase of $25 @Rite Aid

Kellogg's Cereal Raisin Bran, Frosted Mini Wheats, Special K or Smart Start 12-20 oz. Selection may vary by store.
Use 2 coupons $1.00 1/11 insert
Buy One, Get One Free

Excedrin 20-24 ct. Selection may vary by stores $1.99
$1.00 Coupon =Final Price .99

Freedom Lite Blood Glucose Monitoring System FREE After In-Pack Rebate $9.99
Should have $9.99 coupon in 1/4/09 Sunday paper=final cost FREE **this is only so you can use the $5.00 off coupon from above

Glade Glass Candle 4 oz. Selection may vary by store 2 for $5.00

Rite aid ad has coupon for $1.00 off use that plus your coupon

Glade Fabric & Air Spray 22 oz. $2.99
Looks like ad says 50%off second one so use ad coupon plus two coupons $.75 off and final cost should be around $2.98 for two

Ziploc Bags Sandwich or Snack Bags - 50 ct. Freezer 10 - 20 ct. Storage 15 - 25 ct. Selection may vary by store $1.99
Use store coupon plus $1 coupon from 1/11 insert and final cost should be $1.98 for two

Ziploc Twist'n Loc containers 3-4 ct. Selections may vary by store $1.99 Use store coupon plus 1/$1.50 coupon from 1/11 insert=$1.48 for two

These are just suggestions but do buy the monitor if you have the coupon, then you only have to spend $15 more to reach the $25 total, which is calculated before your coupons
so lets just say you bought the following

2-cereals (can't see the cost but probably $5)
2-ziploc bags
2-ziploc containers
-the $5.00 printable coupon above
-buy one get one free cereal plus 2/$1 off coupons=$7.00 off
-$9.99 coupon for monitor
-50%off 1 ziploc+ 1 $1.00 off 2 coupon=$2.00 off
-50%off ziploc container plus 1 $1.50 off coupon=$2.49 off
=$1.47 OOP

****BONUS you can send in the manufacturers rebate for the monitor and you get back $9.99. What a bargain wish we had a Rite Aid here. You could buy the Excedrin instead of the ziploc bags, then use the $1.00 off Excedrin coupon and your OOP would only be 48 Cents. Just Mix and match so you get what you want for the lowest OOP possible. It's like a puzzle, trying to the figure out which pieces go together.

This is based on not really knowing what coupons you have and that I can't read the ad too well online but you get the picture. Just remember you can use their circular coupons with your manufacturer coupons and if you use buy 1 get one 50% off/ use a coupon for each (2 coupons)and make sure your total is $25. Happy shopping and as always have a Frugalicious Day.............

CVS On A Ten Dollar Budget

Today I was on a quest to see how much I could buy with only ten dollars. I purposely didn't use any previous extra bucks, just $10.00 and my coupons.

My creation

FYI: I am a beginner when it comes to the whole coupon thing. I have always used a few coupons here and there but now I'm beginning to become wiser, well when it comes to shopping. Haha. I used to keep my coupons in a little box that had dividers for everything but I found this to be a hassle. I know many of you have your own nifty ideas like using binders and etc. However, I am not at that couponing level...yet. SO in the mean time I made this:

I used your basic day planner and made slots for coupons out of photo album inserts. I used a hole punch to make holes in the inserts to match the rings in the day planner. Ooh and just in case you are I didn't buy a new planner. I actually recycled my old one from 2007 :) Another great thing about this idea is: IF YOU DROP IT, YOUR COUPONS DON'T FALL OUT! How great is that?!

Walgreens Deal

Good Afternoon,
The other day I went to Walgreens and noticed all the Hannah Montana and High school musical stuff was 50 % off. I didn't get it then but decided I better get the High School Musical Sleeping bag for my granddaughter before they were all gone. Good thing I did, it was the last one. Of course I had to get a few other things. Just thought I'd share these deals with you. I wanted to get a few more items at CVS but they were severely bare.

4-Oust Air Fresheners (B1G1)
2-Scrubbing Bubbles (B1G1)
2-Celestial Green Tea (B1G1)

So in addition to the sale Walgreen's has going with the buy one get one free I stacked that with my coupons as follows:
2-B1G1 Oust (1/11/09 insert) Max coupon allowed was $3.49 and these were $3.79 so I paid .60/4
2-Scrubbing Bubbles .75 off (1/11/09 insert)=1.49/2
2-Celestial Tea $1.00 off (1/11/09 insert)= $1.49/2

Total Cost $28.12
Used $3.00 RR

4-Beggin Strips 2/$7

January- National Volunteer Blood Donor Month

Hello everyone!
Have you ever donated blood? Well, I have several times and it doesn't take long at all. It's quite rewarding knowing that you are saving lives. This time of the year is traditionally a difficult time for blood centers to collect donations. In an effort to encourage blood donation, January has been designated National Volunteer Blood Donor Month by America's Blood Centers and the American Red Cross.

Almost 38,000 units of blood are used in hospitals across the country every day. Most of this blood comes from people who willingly take an hour out of their schedules to give blood and help save lives.
Blood donations can be given at hospitals and blood drives across the country. You must be 17 and weigh at least 110 pounds in order to donate (though requirements may differ in some states). You can donate once every eight weeks, but you must be free of sexually transmitted diseases and meet other eligibility requirements. Every time you donate, you will be asked a several questions that help screen out unusable donations.

After a volunteer donates blood, he or she will usually be offered crackers or juice. This is because your body loses some glucose and fluids when you donate blood. Follow the advice of the medical professionals on staff at the donor center. Before you go to donate, make sure you eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids. Afterwards, juice is probably the best choice to replace the lost glucose, and one container should be enough. As for the fluid loss, make sure you drink plenty of water after donating, and after you've left the donation center.

The blood mobiles can be found everywhere and yes even on weekends just give them a call to find a location near you. You can even sponsor a blood drive, you set the date, time, and location and a representative will meet with you to discuss the event with you . My husband and I have sponsored several blood drives, the blood mobile will set up anywhere you want to have your blood drive at. For more information or to locate a donation center in your area visit: Red Cross or Give Life website
