Tip-a-licious Thursday

Even though Earth Day has passed, we would still like you to continue to think green. Today we would like to provide you with eight ways to green your home!

  1. Clean out your storage-We all have a closet or garage full of items that haven't been used in a long time! An easy way to organize these areas is to group items and decide what to do with them arrodingly. Some grouping examples: electronics, household waste, & scrap metal.
  2. Recycle smarter-Once you've grouped out what you want to get rid of, figure out how and where to recycle them or donate them for reuse. When shopping you should try to buy items that are made from recycled content and with limited packaging.
  3. Use energy more wisely-Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 20 percent of the energy of incandescent bulb, and they also last 10 times as long. Keeping your thermostat at reasonable temperatures in both the winter and the summer is also a great energy saver.
  4. Use less water-Try taking shorter showers or putting a bottle in you toilet tank, saving water is important because it is a limited resource.
  5. Start composting-You can include most food scraps and material like cardboard, which will biodegrade in your yard and produce nutrient-rich fertilizer.
  6. Invest in energy-efficient appliances-IF you can afford it, start replacing older appliances in your home with more energy efficient ones. In the long run these products will not only reduce your energy output but also save you money!
  7. Start a green group-Talk to your friends about the importance of conserving, and develop programs and activities in your neighborhood for others to get involved.
  8. Plant a cliche, but planting trees reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.

Wordful Wednesday

I recently made a trip to the Central Valley of CA to visit my family. I had a great time seeing my grandparents, aunts, brother, niece, & nephew (top pic: daughter, nephew, son, grandpa, niece, & grandma). I especially had a great time visiting my uncle's property in Lemon Cove (the other 2 pictures). It's so beautiful up there! I wish I could have went to visit his property when he was still alive :( While we were at my uncle's property I helped pick oranges & I must say that it was the most field labor I have ever done.

This week's Wordful Wednesday hosted by Angie at:

Tasty Tuesday

Today I would like to post a recipe for Beefy Stuffed Peppers! I love this recipe because instead of cooking the stuffed peppers in the oven, you use a slow cooker. The slow cooker is easy to use, easy to clean, & cooks the peppers evenly! Here's what you need:

6 Red or yellow bell peppers
1 ½ Pounds of lean ground beef
1 can (11 ounce) Mexican-style corn
1 can (7 ounce) sliced ripe olives
1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
½ cup converted rice
1 packet (1.0 ounce) taco seasoning
1 can (10 ¾ ounce) condensed tomato soap
1 can (10 ounce) diced tomatoes
¼ cup shredded Mexican cheese blend

Servings: 6
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 3 hours (high) or 6 hours (low)

  1. Cut tops off peppers. Remove stems, seeds, and cores from peppers. Dice pepper tops.
  2. In a large bowl, combine beef, corn, olives, 1 cup cheese, the rice, taco seasoning, and diced pepper tops. Stuff peppers with equal portions of meat mixture. Place peppers in a 4 to 5 quart slower cooker.
  3. In another bowl, combine soup and tomatoes. Pour over stuffed peppers in slow cooker. Top peppers with ¼ cup shredded cheese. Cover and cook on high heat setting for 3 to 4 hours or low heat setting for 6 to 7 hours.

How Clean is Your Cell Phone? (CLOSED)

Everyday we hold our cell phones next to our face oblivious to the fact that it is covered with germs! A recent study by researchers at the University of Arizona found that the average cell phone is much dirtier than a toilet seat, with cell phones averaging 25,000 germs per square inch. Can we say ewwww?!

Since buying my iPhone it has been attached to me! I use my iPhone everyday to check emails, use the Internet, make/receive calls, send text messages, play games & much more! Daily my 2 year old son covers my iPhone with fingerprints & dirt while playing with the Whoopie Cushion App. :) Whenever I see his little fingerprints on it I usually clean the screen with my shirt, sweater, or whatever is nearby. I guess I do it out of habit because I always end up with the same result: more smudges! Hmmm is there a product that can be used to safely clean cell phones???

Well lucky for us a very smart lady named Jessica Pohlkamp created Celly Smellys!

Celly Smellys are the first LCD safe cleaning wipe for electronics infused with fresh, clean fragrance including Smelly Berry, Smelly Melon and Smelly Colada. Celly Smellys are LCD safe for all devices and touch screens. They come in a convenient zipper lock package to preserve freshness and add value to your purchase by keeping your wipes fresh! Celly Smellys remove the dirt and grime where germs may reside leaving your personal electronic devices sparkling clean and smelling great!

I tried the Smelly Berry on my iPhone and loved how quick it cleaned my phone. With one swipe of the wipe my iPhone was left with absolutely no streaks & smells yummy. The delightful smell is can't help but sniff your phone but please don't lick it! Haha!

I currently have Smelly Melon & Smelly Colada up for grabs. I love this product so much & I'm quite sure you will too.

Hello Ladies! I wanted to let you know that I am finally home, I was in Central CA for a week visiting family. It was great but I am glad to finally be home and have my high speed internet back. Haha. I entered my home and to my surprise I had a ton of mail (products to review, freebies, & my prize I won from Ashley at Memoirs from my kitchen).

Well I also wanted to update you on the status of my mother. She had surgery on her foot friday and is doing well but is in pain. She is pretty stubborn so she might find some energy (after a pain pill) to go to CVS. Anyway, send her lots of well wishes, hugs, and hopes for a speedy recovery! LOVE YOU MOM....Stay off your foot!

Freebie Friday

Hello ladies! Friday is finally here . My mother will be having surgery on her foot today (hugs mom!) and I am still on my mini vacation. We usually add Mister Linky as well as a list of free magazines & etc, however, I am using my grandparent's dial-up internet! Need I say more? LOL.

Note: The Google Spreadsheet did not work for me. I think it was because of my dial up connection :(
Note: Coupon expires 4/26/09

We hope you have a very frugalicious weekend! If you would like to share any great freebies with us, please leave us a comment with the link. As soon as I get back to my DSL I will add it to our list. Thanks for stopping by!

Tip-A-Licious Thursday

When my children were small, we would do a lot of arts and crafts projects. I'm not sure who had more fun them or me. Well one project we did was made bar soaps. Each made their own unique bar. They made them in different colors, scents, and shapes.

***Parents please be sure to watch little ones as the soap is very hot***
I did the melting and pouring, they just added the scents, coloring and any additional items they wanted in there

Melt & pour soap is a great way for a beginner to make soap at home. Since the soap part is already made, you avoid handling lye.

What you'll need:
1. Melt & pour soap (you can get this at Hobby Lobby, Michaels or any craft store)
2. Essential oils or blends for scent (I used a Rose scent)
3. herbs or food colouring for colour & texture (oatmeal, cinnamon powder etc.)
4. Saucepan
5. Molds - chocolate molds, milk cartons, really any small flexible container. You can line anything with plastic as well. Or you can get molds at the craft store
6. Various utensils (cutting board, knife, spoon etc)

The basic instructions are as follows:
1. Cut up the melt & pour soap in small chunks. The smaller they are, the faster they will melt.
2. Put the soap in the saucepan (put the lid on) set on your stove burner at low heat (gas range is not recommended - use your microwave instead - short bursts & check frequently)
3. Once the soap has melted, and stir well to make sure everything has mixed. Try to not introduce any bubbles, but if your soap is hot enough (and liquid enough) they will rise to the top before you pour into the molds).
4. Let the soap sit with the heat off and the lid on for a few minutes, then pour into molds. If you have added things that tend to settle to the bottom, and you want it to be more evenly distributed, then wait until the soap thickens as it cools, stir carefully and only then pour the soap into the molds.
If you are making several I would pour each into their own molds then add the coloring, scent, etc.. and gently stir into each. Or if you are using the same scent and colors mix in pot then pour into molds and add their trinkets into each individual one. What ever is easier for you.
(We used different things like satin rose petals with rose scent, one of my children added green food coloring and added an army man) Just let them get creative.
5. Leave the molds until the soap has set completely. There is nothing more frustrating when the soap is still liquid in the center when you try to pop it out of the mold! Try not to be impatient.
6. Remove from the mold and enjoy. If your soap needs to be persuaded to leave the mold, you may put the whole thing into the freezer for a few minutes and see if that helps. You can also try oiling the mold to see if that helps.

Frugal Mama & CVSer

Tasty Tuesday

For those of you that love Chicken, you'll love this recipe. It's very rich in flavor and of course very easy.

Sesame Chicken Drumettes

Here's what you'll need:

1-Package Drumettes (frozen or fresh) I usually buy 1 large frozen bag or about 1 1/2 Lbs
1-Cup Teriyaki Sauce
1-Tablespoon Sherry
1-Tablespoon Toasted Sesame Seeds (you can find these in the spice section)
2-Tablespoon Barbecue Sauce
2-Tablespoon Honey

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the thawed drumettes in a single layer on cookie sheet. In a small bowl mix up Teriyaki, Sherry, and Sesame Seeds. Brush the mixture on the drumettes. Bake them for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. While this is cooking mix Barbecue Sauce and Honey. Then brush this mixture on the drumettes and bake for another 10-15 minutes.

CVS on a Ten Dollar Budget

Today I didn't do too well. I used two cards, mine and my husbands. I hate doing it, it's just too confusing. Hey, but this week I think I'll try Walgreens. I'll let you know how I do. Who knows I may add Walgreens on a Ten Dollar Budget.

Tip-a-licious Thursday

Do you love eating out but are worried about gaining weight? Did you know that most restaurants have healthy choices on their menus? If you ever find yourself at a restaurant that does not offer a healthy choice menu-DON'T WORRY just use these tips:

Do the Research

If many of your meals come from fast food restaurants, you will need to do some research. Go online and visit the websites of the fast food restaurants in your area. Many fast food restaurants have nutrition guides that will tell you the fat and calories of their menu items. Take time to view each nutrition guide and study the foods that you usually pick. Many times you may think you're making healthy choices, but you're not. Once you do your research, you will have a better understanding of which items are healthy choices.

Always Know Your Options
Once you have done your research, you can either write down the foods that are healthy choices or you can also print out the nutrition guides and keep them in your car. The next time you visit your favorite fast food restaurant, you'll be able to make healthy choices.

Avoid Calorie Filled Salads
Many people visiting fast food restaurants choose salads thinking they are making a healthy choice. Unfortunately, they usually aren't making a healthy choice. Many salads are now covering in pieces of fried chicken, cheese, bacon, and high calorie dressing. The next time you order a salad, choose grilled chicken with a low-fat dressing.

Choose Health Conscious Restaurants

There are fast food restaurants that are built around the principle of serving healthy meals. One of those places is Subway. At Subway you can find subs that are low in fat and calories. You can also find baked potato chips and whole grain chips.

Avoid Soft Drinks
Even when you choose diet soft drinks, it may be hard to find decaffeinated drinks. When you go to a fast food restaurant, it's best to choose water. You can make healthy choices when it comes to food and then ruin your calorie intake by choosing the wrong soft drinks.

Substitute High Calorie Condiments

You may think you're making a healthy choice by choosing a grilled chicken sandwich, but many of these sandwiches have mayonnaise which makes them high in calories and fat. When you order sandwiches ask them to leave off the mayonnaise. You can then request packs of honey mustard for a grilled chicken sandwich or ketchup and mustard for hamburgers.

Choose Grilled Rather than Fried Foods
You may think that any meal with chicken is a healthy choice, but you'd be wrong. When you choose chicken nuggets, you're actually consuming more calories than if you had chosen a hamburger. The best thing to do is choose grilled chicken rather than fried, and avoid fatty condiments.

Choose Healthier Sides
Many fast food restaurants will now allow you to choose healthier sides. This means you can choose chili or a baked potato instead of fries. This is a much healthier choice than French fries. If you don't have the option to choose, you may want to purchase a sandwich and a small salad instead of a combo.

Always remember that one of the key ways to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight is through portion control! A great resturaunt that offers tasty food and healthy choices is Chili's, who has what is called the Guiltless Grill. The Guiltless Grill gives you more choices for your healthy lifestyle. All items are under 750 calories, 25 grams of fat and 8 grams of saturated fat. Served with steamed seasonal veggies and Parmesan cheese.

Would like to try out the Guiltless Grill?

Wordful Wednesday

Pictured above are two pictures of my husband & I: One is of our wedding day and the other is when my husband returned from Iraq (1 month before our 1 year anniversary).

My husband and I went to high school together in Tulare, CA. I honestly hated his guts in h.s. because he was so annoying & still is! LOL. Somehow fate brought us together & now we are getting ready to celebrate our 5 year anniversary on Friday :) The sad part is that my husband is gone until September...Boo! We have been through A LOT but even if I could...I wouldn't change a thing!

My Friend

This week's Wordful Wednesday hosted by Angie at:

Tasty Tuesday

Today's Tasty Tuesday Recipe is Mandarin Chicken Salad. This is simple but tasty and what a refreshing change from a boring regular salad.

Here's what you'll need:

1-12.5 oz Can of Chicken Breast Chunks
1-Cup Cole Slaw Mix
2-8oz Cans Chow Mein Veggies
1-Small Bag Green Salad Mix
1-5oz Can Chow Mein Noodles
1 or 2-11oz Cans of Mandarin Oranges (I use two, I like oranges)

For the dressing you will need:
1-Cup Mayo
2-Tablespoons Soy Sauce
1-Teaspoon Ground Ginger

In a large bowl, toss chicken, cole slaw mix, and drained chow mein veggies until mixed. In another bowl mix your mayo, soy sauce, and ginger for your dressing and set aside. Line up your plates and add small amount of green salad mix to each, then top with your chicken, chow mein and slaw mix. Add dressing to each and garnish with noodles and oranges.

Happy Easter

Hope everyone is having a Great Day. Easter is so much fun for small children. When my kids were little, I would bake and let them help me decorate the cookies, cupcakes, cake or what ever it was I baked for the occasion. Although they made a huge mess they loved helping. I don't have any little ones around, all my grandchildren live in California but I decided to do a little baking.
Pictured are my Easter cupcake baskets. These are fun to make and your kids are sure to love them. I decorated one for each of my grandchildren.
I baked my cupcakes as usual, then I added green food coloring to my frosting, added jelly beans on top and used licorice as my handles.
Have a Great Easter

Tip-a-licious Thursday

I know most of you are have started or are looking forward to starting your spring cleaning. Okay so, we don't really look forward to it but it has to be done. I recently read an article that had some good tips and most of which I generally use. I'm including this list in hopes it will help some of you with your spring cleaning.

1. Room by Room-Spread out your cleaning over several days. Clean one room at a time, this allows for a more thorough cleaning. This way you have time to clean from top to bottom, use duster with extender to clean ceilings to ensure there are no cobwebs, clean out drawers, closets, baseboards, etc..

2. Use containers-These are great tools and come in so many sizes and colors. You can use these to separate your items into categories, making it easier to clean up after each use especially for children.

3. Make a List- I can't stress how important this is. Make your to do list prior to starting and cross out completed projects as you go. This gives you some kind of schedule and also a good feeling as you see your to do list dwindle down. If its written down you tend to stay more focused on what needs to be done and when it need to be done by.

4. Turn it up- The stereo that is. I find that it makes it a lot more fun when you can sing and move to the beats. Hey, you can even get a little exercise out of it.

5. Recruit help- Sure kids aren't always excited about helping but if you give them some chores it sure does help. I don't have any small children anymore but when my daughter was little I would have her clean baseboards. Did she enjoy it? NO, in fact she hated it but it was a big help for me. Just remember to only give them task that they can do otherwise you'll end up having to do it over again.

6. Invest in a carrying container- You know something that you can put your cleaners in and carry around with you. Put all your cleaning sprays, furniture polish, rags, anything you will need to complete your cleaning project. I do this so I don't have to go back and forth to get the different cleaners I need.

7. Set your start date and time- I always set a start and finish date. Sometimes I'm able to start tomorrows project today.

8. Most of all don't deviate from your plan or date. It's okay to do more on one day but not less, always complete your projects assigned for that day otherwise you'll fall behind schedule, get discouraged and might not finish.

I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I finish my entire list and I love a clean house. Well what are you waiting for, let's get started.

Wordful Wednesday

It was an early Easter for the Holley Family! Our military housing had a Easter shin-dig that included activities like face painting, crafts (hence why my daughter and I have sun hats on), & of course an Easter egg hunt. It was so much fun except for the fact that I got sunburned. For the past month I have been pretty bummed out that my husband is leaving for 5 and a half months. The last time my husband was deployed was from Sept. '04 to Mar. '05, so its been quite some time. However, the last time he deployed we had only 1 child & I stayed with my mother until he got back. THIS time I'm all alone in San Diego with 2 kids and pregnant :( So anyway, this Easter event meant a lot to us because it's the last time we'll be together until the end of Sept.

This week's Wordful Wednesday hosted by Angie at:

Tasty Tuesday

Good Morning! Are you looking for a filling, simple, & delicious recipe? Well, I would like to introduce you to a popular Hawaiian dish called Loco Moco. My Uncle Barry and cousin Kai made this for me one day and I thought it was so weird but after the first bite of my bowl of Loco Moco, I fell in love. Try it out!

  • 2 scoops of white rice (you can use however much rice you want)
  • 1 cooked hamburger patty
  • One fried egg
  • 1/2 cup brown gravy

Put 2 scoops of rice in a shallow bowl or on a deep plate. top with a hot grilled hamburger patty, top the meat with a fried egg (usually cooked sunny side up) and top with gravy.

  • Although I typically eat this for breakfast, you can eat it anytime: Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner!! You can also be creative and use different types of meat such as SPAM! :)

CVS on a Ten Dollar Budget

This week there were so many things I wanted to buy but not everything was instock when I went. Don't you just hate that, you have a plan all put together and they don't have everything you need so you have to resort to plan B (no, not The PLAN B) but you know what I mean. Overall I did manage to get most of what I wanted. I hope all of you that need diapers are taking advantage of this deal at CVS.
