Amphibious assault ship set to arrive in S.D. today
2:00 a.m. September 14, 2009SAN DIEGO: A new Navy amphibious assault ship will arrive in San Diego today after its trip around South America from the Mississippi shipyard where it was built.
The Makin Island is scheduled to reach San Diego Naval Base at about 2 p.m. with a crew of roughly 1,000 sailors, a Navy spokeswoman said. It left Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., on July 10 and stopped in several countries, including Brazil, Chile and Peru.
The Navy is billing the Makin Island as a “green” ship because of energy-saving innovations to its propulsion system, electrical plant and water purification system.
A commissioning ceremony is set for Oct. 24 in San Diego.
