Tip-a-licious Thursday

A great way to save money is by making your own baby food. It is time consuming but by making your own baby food you have total control of what is put into your baby's food & of course you save $.

Is your baby ready to start solids?

(From MedicineNet)
  • She is able to indicate in some way that she's ready to be fed, such as opening her mouth when you touch a spoon to her lips.
  • He is able to eat sitting up and has the oral motor skills to move the food from the front of his mouth to the back and swallow.
  • She is able to signal when she's had enough, such as turning her head, showing displeasure, or using a hand to push the spoon away.
  • He shows a distinct interest in your food, grabbing at items on your plate or utensils.
Here are the tools you may need:
  • Regular kitchen blender (or)
  • Food processor (or)
  • Hand blender
  • Storage containers/ice cube trays for refrigerating or freezing extra portions.
How to choose your produce:

Choose the freshest fruits and vegetables, and try to use what you buy in a day or two. Fresh is the best option but you can also use frozen. You can use: apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, mangoes, peaches, pears, plums, and prunes, asparagus tips, avocados, carrots, peas, potatoes, sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, and winter squash. Remember to not feed babies who are less than 6 months of age home-prepared beets, carrots, collard greens, spinach, or turnips. They are high in nitrates and can cause a type of anemia in young babies.

How to prepare baby food:

(Great tips from Baby Center)
First, wash your hands, the produce, and all the bowls and utensils. Peel and pit the fruit if necessary.

All vegetables — and fruits like apples and prunes that need to be softened — should be cooked before pureeing or grinding. To preserve vitamins and minerals, bake, boil, or steam the produce until soft. If you boil the food, use as little liquid as possible and add some of the leftover liquid when mashing the food (or add it to your family's soup stock).

To prepare fruits or vegetables, simply add a little liquid (breast milk, formula, or cooking water) to the produce as you puree or grind until the consistency is soupy. As your baby adapts to solid foods, you can add less liquid. If the fruit has seeds, strain before serving.

Grains like rice or millet can also be pureed or ground in a food mill. Cook them first according to package directions.

To prepare meat and poultry, remove the skin and trim the fat before cooking. Then puree the cooked meat in a blender or grind it up in a food mill with a little liquid. For older babies, you can simply chop the meat into very small pieces.

How to store your baby food:

Fill up ice cube trays with the pureed food, freeze them solid, then store in ziplock bags, and label. Keep baby food in freezer for no longer than 3 months for fruit, vegetable and meat puree. Do not refreeze baby food that has already been frozen. There are also a number of products for baby food storage such as: BabySteps freezer tray, Baby Cubes, or Fresh Baby food trays. Although using such products can help out, using regular ice cube trays will also work just fine & save you $.

Note: ALWAYS consult your child's pediatrician before starting solid foods. We do not claim to be experts.

Wordful Wednesday

My husband & dad are serving on a new ship called the USS Makin Island aka the "Prius". This past Saturday more than 5,000 family, friends, distinguished guests and crew members were on hand to see USS Makin Island (LHD 8) come to life in an official commissioning ceremony. It was AWESOME! Here are some pictures from the ceremony:

(Below is an article I found about the USS Makin Island.)

The USS Makin Island, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, was commissioned last Saturday morning at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego.

Dubbed the 'Prius of Navy warships,' the Makin Island is built with gas turbine engines and electric drive. The Navy projects that this will save nearly $250 million in fuel costs over the ship's lifetime.

The ship, which was built by Northrop Grumman at a cost of about $1.8 billion, was delivered to the base in April. It will be a member of the U.S. Pacific Fleet as part of Amphibious Group Three. It's 844 feet long, weighs 42,800 tons, and was designed to transport Marines and their equipment.

It can hold 1,100 to 1,200 sailors and about 2,000 Marines. It can also carry up to 25 aircraft, including six CH-53 Sea Stallion heavy-lift transport helicopters, AH-1 attack helicopters and AV-8B Harrier II ground attack aircraft.

This week's Wordful Wednesday hosted by Angie at:

Tasty Tuesday

This recipe is for Bonnie of Tulare.

CHICKEN ENCHILADAS

Cook the chicken, once cooled shred and set aside. Heat a little olive oil in small fry pan and place each tortilla in oil, just enough to soften. Place chicken, cheese, onions in tortilla and roll. Fill pan with the enchilada rolls. Heat cream of chicken soup with half a can of water, pour over enchilada rolls. Top with more cheese and bake until cheese is melted.

Wordful Wednesday

I don't know how many of you have been so lucky enough to travel abroad; sadly I am not one of them. As you know my husband is in the Navy & recently sailed around South America to San Diego, Ca. One of the ports he stopped at was Rio De Janeiro, Brazil!

<span class=

I am so jealous of my husband because of ALL places in the world, I would love to visit Rio. I have always been fascinated with the statue of Jesus Christ better known as Christ the Redeemer. I wish so much I could have been by my husband's side in this picture. :(
However, one day I will get to experience this statue for myself.

This week's Wordful Wednesday hosted by Angie at:

Great Deal at Walmart

I was at Walmart shopping for a few things when I stumbled upon some cheap outfits. Yaaay--I got these three outfits for $11! The two dresses were marked down to $3, probably because it will be cold soon. When the cold weather comes just throw some leggings on under the dress & BAM baby will be warm.

Wordful Wednesday

Today I thought I would do a comparison between my daughter, husband, and myself. Everyone keeps telling me that she looks just like my husband. Grr. What do you think? Keep in mind that I am using our baby pictures (mine looks horrible. Thanks mom!).

Pearls of Joy Giveaway (Closed)

Recently the Pearls of Joy company sent me a pair of White Freshwater Hoop Earrings to review. I had never really been a huge fan of pearls, to tell you the truth they just seemed so grandma-ish (funny thing is I'm now a grandma of 6). When I opened the box I was quite surprised they were absolutely beautiful. They were delivered in a nice gift box, along with an appraisal. Great timing, my husband and I went out to dinner with friends for my birthday. I wore my pearl earrings and my friends loved them. I'm telling you pearls are a forgotten piece of elegance that are just enough and not overpowering, I love them.

The Pearls of Joy company offer a variety of designs, pearl styles, and colors. With every purchase they include a 3rd Party Appraisal & Certificate Of Authenticity.Pearls of Joy guarantees every item it sells for integrity of quality, and authenticity of pearls - In Writing. All of their prices are 80-90% below retail, which of course is important to all of us. In purchasing their products you can be certain that all of the pearls in their jewelry are genuine, good to excellent quality that have undergone no enhancements or treatments from their natural states, except for industry standard procedures. These pearls will bring many years of enjoyment!
