Your baby will start recording things in her mind from birth but will not be aware of what is really happening. During the third trimester of your pregnancy your baby will have begun to recognize your voice and at four days old she will be able to distinguish between your face and a stranger's. It is at this time she will also recognize Dad if he has been present throughout the pregnancy. She will certainly recognize your smell and be comforted by it from birth.

A researcher recently carried out the following experiment. He looked at babies aged two months whilst they were in their cots and awake. He repetitively poked his tongue out at the babies who watched with fascination. Twenty-four hours later he returned to the same babies in their cots and looked at them but this time he did not stick out his tongue. The babies amazingly started to stick their tongues out at him as if to say 'I remember you! This is what you did!' This ability in identifying people and things is known as recognition memory and it gets stronger and better as your baby gets older. A newborn baby will recognize her mother's voice from birth because she will already be familiar with her voice from her time in the womb. A week after birth a breastfed baby will recognize her mother's smell. A few months after birth your baby will begin to recognize faces that she often sees and may develop a preference for some, usually her mother and father's as she spends the most time with them.

Between six months and a year, your infant will develop and enhance her recall memory. This is her ability to recollect a specific experience and some of its details for a short time. Once this type of memory begins to develop in your baby she will begin to become more emphatic about what she wants. The things that she will remember first are those which are repeated often and those which hold more importance to her, for example; meal times, play times, bath time and also specific toys that she has become attached to. You will notice that she might start to make actions she has associated with certain toys and she will learn what activity comes after the other because of repetition of the event. When you notice that your baby knows what is coming next it is showing you she remembers what happened last time.

Once your baby is one to two years old she will have begun to remember some words. She will recognize familiar faces like other family members and you will see this in her excitement in seeing them. It is a joy to watch and be surprised by how much she can remember as she grows older.

Conscious, long lasting memory develops when your little one is fourteen to eighteen months old. This is when she starts to remember specific events. At two years of age your child will have the ability to remember facts and events for example, going to the circus or the park with her grandmother. Observing your child grow and develop her memory you will notice how she will begin to link experiences in her past to her current experiences. By recollecting her experiences she will start to have expectations of what will happen in the future.

For the life of me I cannot find where I found this recipe! All I know is that a friend introduce me to it because it's quick, easy, and filling. I'll admit that when my friend mentioned that it was a recipe for Pork and Beans, I instantly expressed that I was not interested. You see, when I was growing up my dad would always eat beanie weenies and rice which eventually lead to my unfavorable opinion of it. Haha. However, this recipe is delicious because you actually use pork loin instead of hot dogs.

Ingredients:

2 lb boneless pork loin

1 small onion, diced

1 cans pork and beans, 26oz.

1 can kidney beans, 15oz.

1 cup barbecue sauce

1/4 cup brown sugar

Directions:

1) In crockpot, combine onion, pork and beans, kidney beans, barbecue sauce, and brown sugar. Mix well, then add pork loin. (Note: You can cut loin in half or place whole loin in crockpot).

2) Cover crockpot and cook on low for 8 hours or until pork is tender.

3) Once roast is tender, shred with two forks. (Note: I choose to shred the meat in the crockpot but you can remove the pork loin from pot to shred.)

4) Mix shredded pork and beans well then serve.

Sibling Rivalry: What Can Parents Do?

Sibling rivalry can take many forms over the years. When the second child is first born, it can take the form of acting out, regression, and fussiness on the part of the older child. And as the kids grow up, it can turn into arguing, physical fighting, and deep feelings of jealousy and resentment. Most sibling rivalry is more of an annoyance than a serious problem, but it can become emotionally taxing to parents who had hoped their children would get along and love each other.

There are a few points to keep in mind that might help you cope emotionally with your children's rivalry. First, a little fighting does not mean your children do not love each other. Second, remember that a little competition is natural, and that it may actually help build certain skills in your children. Third, keep in mind that children who fight often go on to be best of friends when they get older. And fourth, you are not alone. Virtually every multi-child family must deal with sibling rivalry at one time or another.

What causes sibling rivalry?

In most cases, the causes of sibling rivalry actually are not so deep. It is just a competition for parental love and attention. At any given time, one child may feel that the other is getting more, and this may lead to bad feelings, even if the feelings are unconscious. At different times in a child's development, these feelings may be more intense than at others.

Meanwhile, some kids are just temperamentally more combative than others. Perhaps one of your children is continually picking fights with another, who usually does not start the conflict. In such cases, it is the parents' job to moderate the rivalry without seeming to favor the gentler child over the more combative one.

Also, it has been shown that kids who live in conflict-ridden households are more likely to fight with their siblings. When parents frequently fight openly within earshot of their kids, for this behavior to rub off on the children is only natural. That is one reason why parents who want to avoid sibling rivalry should argue privately if they must argue at all.

What should parents do?

Parenting experts recommend that mom and dad stay uninvolved in sibling arguments for as long as possible. By getting involved, you teach the children that they can always turn to you when they have an argument, and you risk being perceived as taking sides or protecting one child over the other. If you feel you must get involved, start by merely trying to guide the kids to their own resolution, warning them in the process not to call names or be abusive to one another.

In short, it is best for everyone if the kids can learn how to solve their disagreements without parental intervention. And when you decide to intervene, the goal should be to deflate the situation so everyone has time to calm down and the disagreement can de-escalate. Often, kids just need a little time apart to get over their feelings. And in the meantime, try not to place blame on anyone.

Here are a few other tips that can help parents deal with sibling rivalries:

Discourage kids from talking about what is or is not "fair." Let them know that things are not always equal, and that they both need different things at different times.
Make sure each child gets plenty of one-on-one attention, and encourage each individually to pursue his or her interests and be who he or she wants to be.
Make sure the children get time apart from each other.
Make it clear that they need to love each other even though they fight. Banish words like "hate" and other extreme terms.
If the kids commonly fight over certain items or activities, set a schedule for when each child gets a turn.
If it becomes too much for you to handle, consider seeing a family counselor.

How does Spaghetti with Butternut Squash sound?

For some reason you can't see all my butternut squash but trust me...there was plenty! Before this recipe, I had never tasted butternut squash nor did I know what it looked like. Haha. Sad, I know! For those of you that seen this recipe in All You but haven't tried it out yet, trust me when I say that it was delicious.

Meet Rosco! This is my 5-year-old ~~son~~ Boston Terrier. Isn't he adorable? We've had him since he was a pup.

Actually Rosco became a part of our family around the same time we had our son, Jae'Sun.

Our boys have grown up together and love being around each other (despite the fact that Jae'Sun is allergic to pet dander).

Life would be so different without Rosco around. I never realized how different until we almost lost Rosco on Christmas DAY! Rosco suffered a seizure and was rushed to the animal hospital. Talk about scary!

We left the hospital without an explanation of why his seizure even occurred. Fortunately, Rosco has not experienced another one. Phew!

Rosco is such a sweet dog. Just look at that face....how could you not love him!

Forget store bought biscuits! Give this simple recipe a try. My husband actually found this recipe in his cookbook he made in his 6th grade cooking class. WOW! I'm surprised he held onto this book for 17 years! Ahhh oldies but goodies. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F
2. Sift flour and mix with baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender (or use a fork if you do not have a pastry blender).
3. Stir milk into flour mixture with a fork. Continue to stir until dough becomes soft and moist.
4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 10-12 times.
5. Roll out dough to a 1/2 inch thickness, then cut with biscuit or cookie cutter (or you can use a small round cup).
6. Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheets and bake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Ideas for Naturally Inducing Labour

Premature birth may worry you as it worries most expectant parents but becoming overdue can also bring its own concerns and difficulties. As you become larger, sleeping can become more challenging. It becomes increasingly more difficult to get into a comfortable position as does breathing as your lungs become more crowded due to your overgrown uterus. If your baby stays in too long then there are risks associated with this, most commonly that your baby could pass meconium. If you find yourself overdue and are seeking advice to naturally help induce labour then the following is a list of ideas to do exactly that.

Sex- is often prescribed by doctors to help induce labour because the prostaglandins in semen help soften and prepare the cervix to dilate.

Herbs – hundreds of years ago midwives used herbs to prepare mothers for pregnancy, labour and birth. This was before the invention of pitocin. You must be very cautious with herbs of any kind as they can cause great damage if the correct dosage is not administered. Black cohosh, available in capsules or teas is commonly used to induce labour and can be with or without alcohol. During birth, black cohosh can help strengthen and regulate uterine contractions. Other herbs which have similar effects are red raspberry leaf and false unicorn root. These particular herbs have natural chemicals which are released into the woman's body and stimulate the baby to encourage her to move and get positioned for birth. Herbs should not be used until the cervix is ready to open as they will not work until then. Beware of some herbs which can be dangerous to you or your baby such as aloe vera, bungleweed and pokeroot as these are some of the herbs that can cause premature birth or birth defects. Always consult a doctor before self-medicating with herbs. Primrose oil is used to induce labour as it has a comparable effect to semen in the cervix by softening and ripening it.

Castor Oil – is taken by some women as a natural method of bringing on labour. The theory being that the diarrhoea and cramping it causes also causes contractions that can induce labour. It is unpleasant to taste but two tablespoons can be mixed into another drink such as a juice. It is advised to consume castor oil in the morning as you will be woken in the night with the cramping and diarrhoea if you take it in the evening. There are risks with taking castor oil such as the expectant mother becoming dehydrated because she has diarrhoea and also it increases the risk of the baby passing meconium while still in the uterus.

Nipple Stimulation – for hundreds of years nipple stimulation has been used by women to help induce labour. It has an effect of releasing a natural form of pitocin called oxytocin. Similarly to pitocin, oxytocin triggers contractions that can bring on labour. This method for naturally inducing labour is only effective near to your due date and when you are ready to give birth. Before forty weeks, it is not advisable to induce labour. The nipples can be stimulated manually or a breast pump can be used. Care needs to be taken as your uterus can become hyperstimulated. Only stimulate one nipple at a time and rest immediately once you notice contractions. Wait at least fifteen minutes after the contractions have stopped before resuming. If you do not get any rest between contractions other problems can arise.

Be Active – whilst most doctors advise you to slow down and reduce your activities as you approach your due date, it is also helpful to remain active as long as you do not cause yourself any stress. Walking a wee bit more than usual and slowly swinging your hips from side to side can help induce labour by stimulating your baby and getting her moving into the birthing position. If you fancy some fun, sex is always a good idea as I mentioned before because along with semen helping the cervix to soften, the female orgasm produces a hormone which aids childbirth.

Other methods women have used include acupressure and eating spicy foods, but watch out for possible nausea with spicy food and medical research has not yet supported this idea as definitely being beneficial.

Here's a delicious and filling slow cooker meal - chicken and dumplings! I've posted a similar recipe before but this time I've decided to tweak it a little. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
2 tablespoons butter
2 (10.75 oz) cans condensed cream of chicken soup

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried sage

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper
4 cups frozen vegetables
2 (10 oz) packages refrigerated biscuit dough

Directions:
1. Place the chicken, butter, soup, seasonings and veggies in a slow cooker.

2. Fill with enough water to cover all ingredients.
3. Cook on High for 5 hours. 30 minutes prior to serving, tear biscuit dough into small pieces and place in slow cooker. Cover; cook until the dough is no longer raw in the center.

4. Let cool then serve! My family and I love to serve this recipe over rice.

Breastfeeding Basics: Answers to Five Common Questions

Most new mothers who choose to breastfeed discover almost immediately that little instruction is required. The act of nursing is instinctive for both mother and baby, and even without outside help the process usually goes relatively smoothly. But even when things go relatively smoothly, it is common for problems to arise. If you are encountering breastfeeding problems or are worried about issues you may face in the future, here are some of the most common questions that might arise.

Is breast milk enough?

Many mothers worry that their breast milk will not be enough to satisfy all of a baby's nutritional needs. Set this worry aside. A mother's ability to produce copious, vitamin-rich milk is backed by millions of years of evolution, and the body has an almost incredible ability to produce good milk, even if it means the mother has to miss out on some nutrients herself. Try not to let this happen, though. While breastfeeding, make sure to eat a variety of healthy foods, and be sure to eat a few hundred extra calories per day.

What if my baby will not nurse?

There are any number of reasons why a baby might refuse to take the breast. If your baby is otherwise healthy, reluctance to feed may indicate sleepiness, fullness, or too much gas in the belly. Initially, try to have faith in your baby, and trust that he or she will take the breast when it is time. But if the problem persists and the baby goes several hours without eating, get in touch with your doctor or a lactation consultant.

What if I do not produce enough milk?

For a healthy mother who is breastfeeding, milk supply is based on demand. The more your child eats from the breast, the more milk you will produce. Once you get through the initial week or two of breastfeeding, you may even find that your body produces milk on a set schedule, making at times of day when the baby tends to be most hungry. Try not to worry. Many mothers are initially worried that they will not produce enough milk. More often than not, within a week or two they are producing more milk than they can use (in which case pumping becomes necessary).

How do I prevent spitting up?

First, accept that your baby is going to spit up sometimes. All babies do it. Some do it more than others, and this does not necessarily indicate any failing on the part of the parents. However, spitting up can be minimized by (1) making sure the baby does not eat too much, and (2) burping during and after the feeding process. For the first point, try to read your baby's signals. When she pulls away or slows down drastically, she might be done. As for burping, try to do it once halfway through the feeding and once at the end. You will become quite good at it after a few weeks.

What if my baby falls asleep while feeding?

Newborns are especially wont to fall asleep during feeding, but some older babies continue to do it for months. Think of it as a good sign. It shows that your baby is so soothed by your milk and your presence that he relaxes to the point of sleep. However, it is important to make sure that he gets enough. When he falls asleep, gently pat him, tickle his feet, talk to him, sing to him, or break the mouth suction. Do whatever it takes to keep him sucking until he has had his fill.

I love Chex mix. I mean...who doesn't?! You can make sweet mixes, salty mixes, and even buttery mixes. Mmmmm!!! Last week I made some hot buttered yum chex mix.

Ingredients:

4 cups Honey Nut Chex® cereal
2 cups Cinnamon Chex® cereal
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon rum flavoring
2 cups miniature marshmallows

Directions:
1. In large microwavable bowl, place cereals. In 2-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave butter, brown sugar and honey uncovered on High 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute, until mixture is bubbly. Stir in spices and rum flavoring. Pour over cereal mixture, stirring until coated.
2. Microwave uncovered on High 3 minutes, stirring and scraping bowl after every minute.
3. Cool slightly; about 5 minutes. Stir in marshmallows. Spread on waxed paper. Store in airtight container.
